Instructions to Authors

    Chinese Journal of Digestive Surgery is under the charge of China Association of Science and Technology, and sponsored by Chinese Medical Association. The journal adheres to the principle of "focusing on academic development and considering its popularization as well". It aims at spreading new theories, techniques and experiences in the field of digestive surgery in China and overseas countries so as to act as a bridge for communications between domestic and overseas readers and promote the development of digestive surgery in China. 

    Before submission, please download and read the “Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals” laid out by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and make sure that your article complies with it.

1.  Scope of submission

Manuscripts are welcome from any part of the world on all aspects of digestive surgery, including esophagus, intestine and stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, blood vessel, application of endoscope, interventional therapy, nutritional support as well as other relevant subjects. Original research articles, case reports, review articles and letters to the editors are accepted. 

2.  General Requirements of English Articles

Original papers describing original research of high novelty, practicality, or clinically guiding significance;

Research results (and any other components) that have never been published on other journals;

Does not involve any potential ethical problems;

Does not involve any potential conflicts of interest with other people or organizations;

Research projects supported by funding on provincial level and above, and the funding’s name and number specified in both Chinese and English

Written in good English with no spelling mistakes (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of them). Please note that article with considerable grammatical or spelling errors won’t be able to enter the peer-review stage. Therefore, meticulous proofreading and modification by professionals are highly recommended.

3.Preparation of manuscripts

A summary of technical requirements for preparing the manuscript is provided below: (1) All texts must be double-spaced with margins of at least 2.5 cm. (2) Conventional units are preferred with SI units in parenthesis, if available. The metric system is preferred for the expression of length, area, mass and volume. (3) Use generic names of drugs. The proprietary name may be mentioned in parentheses. (4) The headings of the body are successively numbered in Arabic numerals and are numbered in grading, such as 1, 1.1, 1.1.1.

Title page  Title page should include the full title of the paper, the names (no more than 8), and affiliations of all contributing authors. The name, postal address, telephone number, fax number and Email address of the corresponding author should be given also. Leave a footnote of foundation source and reference number at the lower left-hand corner of the title page if it has.

Author names and affiliations    Bylines should include all those who have participated in the project research. All authors should be notified and agreed to the publication of the article on our journal. To facilitate indexing and retrieval and for unique identification of an author, use family names (all caps) and given names (first letter in cap). For example: ZHANG Li or SONG Jianwu. If the author affiliation entertains cooperation with any overseas research institution, a written acknowledgement by that institution indicating its agreement to the article’s publication on our journal and a statement of no conflicts of interest should be submitted.

To avoid potential disputes, the acknowledgement file should be signed by both the corresponding author and all other authors. Please download the file from our website in the column of “Publication Policies”.

The corresponding English translation of the author affiliation should be that authorized by the institution, and our journal does not take responsibility for any mistranslation made by the author.

Abstract  The abstract should have Chinese and English versions and be described in fewer than 400 words. Structured form of abstract is required which consists of Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusions. The English abstract should be consistent with the Chinese version.

Key words  Following the abstract, 5 to 7 key words chosen from the latest MeSH thesaurus and list of Index Medicus should be supplied.

Introduction  The introduction should be brief and limited to definition of the problem, the necessary background, the aims and purposes of the research and its relation with other studies in the filed. Do not engage in a literature review.

Materials and methods  In this section, how the study was designed, carried out and data were analyzed should be described for others to repeat the experiments. For standard methods, appropriate references are sufficient, but if standard methods are modified, these should be clearly brought out. Authors should provide complete details of any new methods or apparatus used.

Results  The results should be presented clearly and concisely. Only relevant, representative data should be included in this section. Avoid repeating in the text all the data depicted in the tables or illustrations and emphasize only important observations.

Discussion  Discussion ordinarily should not be more than one third of the total length of the manuscript. This section should include a summary of the major findings, their relationship to other similar studies, limitations of methods and implication of these findings in future research. Conclusions should be linked to the goals of the study. Statements which are not completely supported by the data should be avoided.

Acknowledgment  Recognizing the contribution of individuals and supporting institutions and be as brief as courtesy allows.

References  References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they first appear in the paper. References are identified in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses. The titles of journal should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. No more than three authors could be listed, if the number exceeds three, give three followed by “et al”.

Tables  Tables should be brief and self-explanatory. Each column should have short or abbreviated heading. Explanatory matters are placed beneath the table. All nonstandard abbreviations that are used in each table should be explained adequately. Statistical measures of variations should be identified.

Figures and illustrations  Figures and images should be labeled sequentially, numbered and cited in the text. Legends must be submitted for all figures. They should be brief and specific. Use scale markers in the image for electron micrographs, and indicate the type of stain used. Authors will be required to pay the cost of color illustrations published in print.

Abbreviations and symbols   When using abbreviations, write the full name of the abbreviated item followed by the abbreviation in parenthesis at the point of first mention of the abbreviation within the body of the manuscript. Day, hour, minute and second should be abbreviated as d, h, min, and s in tables respectively.  

The basic principles of medical ethics  When the research subjects of the study are human beings, the author should state whether the followed procedure meets with the ethical standards constituted by the (institutional, regional or national) committee which is responsible for human trials. The approval document by the committee (the document number should be written in the study) and informed consent form by the research subjects or their relatives should be provided. When the study involves experimental animals, the Materials and Methods in the manuscript should contain the animal approval number, whether the experiment follows the animal ethical operation standard and providing the ethical approval number. Example: This study has been approved by the ethic committee of the hospital, and the approval number is XXXXXX.

Academic misconducts  If the following situations are found in the published articles by our journal, we will reject or withdraw the manuscripts:

(1) Multiple submissions of one manuscript.

(2) The findings and results reported by the study are not reliable because it has been verified that the relatively serious incredibility, academic misconduct (including fabricating data and tampering data) or non-subjective errors exist.

(3) Plagiarism.

(4) The reported study has transgressed the medical ethical standard.

(5) Repetitive publication.

(6) Severe deficiency of manuscript publication process.

(7) Others.

4.  Publication process

Submission  Authors may submit works by: Submit the manuscript via our web site http://cmaes.medline.org.cn/Login/Login.aspx. When we receive the manuscript, we will send an acknowledgement card with a reference number and fees charged for manuscript evaluation.

Review   Manuscripts with insufficient originality, serious scientific flaws or absence of message will be rejected immediately after an in-house review. The remaining articles are sent to experts on the subject and the final decision is made on the manuscript meeting. The whole process will take approximately 3 months. Then the decision on whether the manuscript is accepted ,rejected, or requires revision will be sent to the authors.

Revision   The accepted manuscripts are subjected to editorial revision to comply with the requirement on the reviewers' comments, language and the style of the journal. The revised manuscripts should be sent to editorial department within 2 months. The rejected manuscripts are not returned to the authors who will receive a decision letter with the reviewers' comments.

Proofs   Corrections on the proof should be restricted to errors only and no substantial addition or deletions should be made.
